Oldfield Primary School

A community of proud and resilient children who are learning to take their place in the world.

Art and Design

“Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.”

 National Curriculum 2014

Aims

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design         techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Pupils should know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. For this reason, we have decided to base our Art around cross curricular links with other subjects the pupils will be studying.

At Oldfield, links with history, allow the children to understand the complexity and values of older societies as well as to appreciate the technologies available at the time. Pupils are also taught the practical skills such as observational drawings which they can usefully apply to other subjects such as Science, Geography and Design Technology.

Our ethos “Pride through Achievement” means that we maximise opportunities for children to celebrate their achievements in Art through display, competitions and framed work in the corridors. In this way, we show that the purpose of Art is to be valued.
